How to guide for Out-of-Province Students

Should I apply for a BC Health Card?

Probably not! As a domestic student, you can access healthcare in BC using your out of province health card. If you are a dependent of your parents or guardian, keep the provincial insurance of the province they file taxes in.

Using an Out-of-Province Health card

  1. Be sure to present your out-of-province medical card when accessing medical services.

  2. You do not need to file a claim to receive coverage for out-of-province medical care.

  3. If your medical coverage is from Quebec, you will need to file a claim using the Out of Country Reimbursement Request Form.

Transferring Health Records

Your health records will not automatically transfer to British Columbia when you move. You will need to request that your home doctor transfer your records to your BC primary care physician. You can (and should!) also request copies of your medical records to keep for yourself! File transfer services are not covered by provincial insurance, so you can expect to pay yourself.
